Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader yesterday said the Ministry of Commerce has failed to control commodity prices in the country.

Quader, also a former commerce minister, made this comment in Rangpur while talking to local journalists.

The JP chairman said, "When I was the commerce minister, if the prices of daily necessities increased, people knew why it happened and would accept it. At that time, people had a faith."

"Now, prices are being controlled by various means," he said, adding that prices of essentials in the country are much higher than anywhere else in the world.

The JP chief also said Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which were considered as failed states, have now recovered well in terms of controlling the prices of their daily necessities. In comparison to Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the price of daily necessities is much higher in Bangladesh, he said.

Regarding the upcoming national parliamentary elections, GM Quader said that the political situation is still uncertain.

"The government wants to hold a kind of election, while the opposition wants it to be held differently. People are worried about whether the election will be held at the right time. That's why JP does not want to make any decisions right now. The party will take action based on the situation in future," he added.
