Man held over Jubo Dal leader Kibria murder dies in DB custody
A man arrested in connection with the killing of Jubo Dal leader Golam Kibria died today while in custody of the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
A three-member probe body has been formed to investigate the incident, said Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Kibria was shot dead by a group of armed assailants in Dhaka's Pallabi area on Monday. His wife later filed a case with Pallabi Police Station, naming five individuals and accusing seven to eight unidentified suspects.
On Thursday, DB teams carried out several raids in Shariatpur and detained three suspects -- Nazrul, Masum, and Zaman, said Talebur.
Police said the trio admitted to their involvement and claimed that the firearm and ammunition used in the shooting were kept with one Moktar Hossain.
Based on the information, a DB team raided a garage in Pallabi around 6:00pm the same day to arrest Moktar. He tried to flee but was caught with the help of locals, who also beat him up, police said.
Acting on his lead, the DB later recovered eight rounds of ammunition from a nearby rickshaw garage.
Moktar, 40, was taken to the DB office but reportedly fell ill around 1:30am today. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors examined him, administered medication, and discharged him. He was then brought back to the DB office.
Around 10:00am today, officers called him for breakfast but got no response. He was again taken to DMCH, where doctors declared him dead, said Talebur.
The body has been sent to DMC morgue for autopsy.
He added, "A three-member committee led by Additional Police Commissioner (Admin) Md Sarwar has been formed to investigate the incident."
