Man detained for 'tearing down' baul artistes’ protest banner in Narayanganj

A man was detained today for tearing down a banner of a Baul artistes' protest programme at Chashara Shaheed Minar in Narayanganj. The protest demanded justice for recent attacks on bauls and shrines.

The incident occurred around 3:00pm, said Mohammad Nasir Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station.

The identity of the detainee could not be known immediately.

Following the incident, additional police were deployed in the area.

"Our forces are prepared to respond to any untoward incident," the OC said.

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-11) were also patrolling to ensure safety of the event.

Around 4:15pm, the event started under the banner of "Narayanganj district baul artistes and devotees of Sufi saints".

Among those present were Rafiur Rabbi, adviser of the Narayanganj Cultural Alliance; Tariqul Suzon, district coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon; Moni Supanth, president of Narayanganj Sangskritik Jote; Dina Tajrin, general secretary; Dhiman Saha Jewel, district president of Shushajoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan); and baul artistes Yunus Bhandari, Chan Mia, and Fakir Shah Jalal.
