Halda River: Two held with sand-laden bulkhead sent to jail
Two labourers arrested with a sand-carrying bulkhead from the Halda river in Chattogram were sent to jail yesterday by the Chattogram Senior Judicial Magistrate Court-6.
The arrestees are Mohammad Solaiman, 22, of Bhola Sadar, and Mohammad Kalam, 32, also from the same district.
They were detained on Wednesday evening from the Katakhali canal near Boruapara in South Madarsha union of Hathazari upazila, said Mohammad Habibur Rahman, sub-inspector of the Halda River Police Outpost.
Police also seized a bulkhead from their possession.
SI Habibur Rahman later filed a case with Hathazari Police Station, after which the two were shown arrested around midnight.
Asked why the owner of the bulkhead was not made an accused, he said police could not initially identify the owner.
"If others are found to be involved during the investigation, their names will be included in the charge sheet," he added.
The upazila administration conducted a similar drive in the same area on Monday afternoon, seizing another sand-laden bulkhead and arresting three people. A mobile court later sentenced each of them to 15 days' imprisonment.
