Feroza Begum’s musical legacy honoured at DU
The “Feroza Begum Memorial Lecture and Scholarship Award 2026” was held yesterday at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University, honouring the legacy of legendary Nazrul Sangeet singer Feroza Begum.
DU Vice Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam attended the programme as chief guest. Also present were Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof Md Abul Kalam Sarker, ACI Group Chairman and trustee donor M Anis Ud Dowla, Treasurer Prof M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Department of Music Chairman Dr Priyanka Gope, and renowned Nazrul Sangeet singer Sadya Afreen Mallick, chief of Culture Initiatives at The Daily Star and founder of Gems of Nazrul.
Sadya Afreen delivered the memorial lecture titled “Surer Dhrubotara: Sur Shomraggi Feroza Begum”.
Highlighting Feroza’s contribution to Nazrul Sangeet, she said, “She did not simply sing Nazrul’s songs. In her voice, Nazrul’s songs became a unique combination of the poet’s feelings and philosophy.”
Two gold medal recipients were honoured, while 11 students received the Feroza Begum Memorial Scholarship.
Prof Obaidul Islam spoke about Feroza Begum’s legacy and the importance of preserving her contribution to music and culture.
The programme concluded with remarks by Dr Priyanka Gope and Prof Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, reaffirming the importance of preserving Feroza Begum’s musical legacy.
