The Civil Surgeon's Office in Gazipur has formed a three-member investigation committee following allegations that a newborn's right arm was fractured during a Caesarean section at a private hospital in Sreepur.

Gazipur Civil Surgeon Mamunur Rahman confirmed the development to The Daily Star this morning.

He said the allegation was made against Al-Araf Hospital in the Railgate area of Sreepur upazila, where the infant's right arm was reportedly fractured during a C-section on Monday afternoon.

The committee has been tasked with conducting an on-site investigation and submitting its report within seven working days.

It is headed by Kuhu Mutsudee, junior consultant (Gynaecology and Obstetrics) at Kaliakair Upazila Health Complex. The other members are Sabrina Mohona, medical officer at the Gazipur Civil Surgeon's Office, and Mohammad Sharif Hossain, junior consultant (Orthopaedic Surgery) at Kapasia Upazila Health Complex, who will also serve as member secretary.

Meanwhile, the newborn's family alleged that although the name of an experienced physician appeared on the official documents, the operation was carried out by an unskilled person.

They claimed the baby's right arm was found to be severely fractured after the surgery and feared the child could suffer permanent disability.

However, Shafiqul Islam, health and family planning officer at Sreepur Upazila Health Complex, said Al-Araf Hospital holds valid and up-to-date licences and that the doctor who performed the operation was qualified.

He confirmed that the newborn had suffered a fracture to the right arm but said the investigation would determine how the injury occurred.
