BNP factions clash in Tanore over Rajshahi-1 nomination
A clash broke out between two factions of BNP in Tanore upazila of Rajshahi on Tuesday evening over the party's primary nomination for the Rajshahi-1 (Godagari–Tanore) constituency.
The confrontation occurred between followers of Major General (retd) Sharif Uddin, who received the party's primary nomination, and supporters of Sultanul Islam Tarek, who was denied nomination.
Tarek's supporters staged a torch procession in the upazila town, demanding the cancellation of Sharif's nomination. Tensions escalated when Sharif's followers arrived, leading to a clash. Several people were reportedly injured, confirmed ASP Mirza Md Abdus Salam of Godagari Circle.
Speaking to reporters, Tarek said, "They are party men, and so are we. When supporters do not like a candidate, protests are held. Like everywhere else in the country, it is happening here too. At the time of my followers' torch procession, supporters of Sharif Uddin attacked."
Sharif could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts. The officer-in-charge of Tanore Police Station was also unavailable.
ASP Salam said the situation is currently calm. "No complaint has been filed with the police station yet. If a complaint is lodged, the police will take necessary action," he added.
