School teacher arrested over rape of intellectually disabled woman

A primary school teacher was arrested yesterday over his alleged involvement in the rape of an intellectually disabled young woman in Mymensingh's Haluaghat upazila.

The arrestee is Md Rafiqul Islam, 58, an assistant teacher of a primary school in Haluaghat, said police.

The victim's mother filed a rape case with Haluaghat Police Station accusing the teacher in the evening, said Md Hafizul Islam Harun, its officer-in-charge.

Quoting the case statement, the OC said the 20-year-old victim whose house is adjacent to the school, used to visit the school on various occasions. When she went to the school on October 22 afternoon, Rafiqul allegedly took her to the school's second floor and raped her.

The victim will be sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for a medical test.

The arrestee is being interrogated at the police station, said the OC. 

Contacted, Selima Akhter Khatun, upazila primary education officer in Haluaghat said she was informed about the matter this afternoon.

"We will take departmental action against the teacher after investigation," said the official.

The headmaster of the school said the victim is an ex-student of the school. "She comes to the school and sits in the corridor sometimes. As she is intellectually disabled, her parents asked us not to drive her away."
