Registrar, adviser resign over graft allegations

The adviser and registrar at National Institute of Textile Engineering and Research (NITER) in Ashulia have resigned after students demonstrated, bringing allegations of irregularities and corruption against them.

NITER Principal Prof Abdul Mottalib confirmed to The Daily Star around 6pm yesterday that registrar Kazi Andalib Amin and adviser Dr Mizanur Rahman submitted their resignation letters, and the governing council accepted those.

On Tuesday evening, hundreds of students gathered in front of NITER's administrative building at Noyar Haat, and confined the registrar and some other teachers to the building. The students said the principal and 16-member governing council are currently running the institute. "Before Principal Mizanur Rahman retired in October, he created a post of adviser -- for himself -- to control the institution," they alleged.

There are allegations of corruption and other irregularities against them when he was the principal, the demonstrators said.

The registrar could not be reached over phone for his comments. Proctor Sadiqur Rahman picked up the call but hung up.

Denying the allegations, Dr Mizan said he held no official post at the institute.

A governing body is running the institute in a public-private partnership, he said.
