PBI finds man reportedly ‘killed’ 5 years ago in Meherpur

Police Bureau of Investigation locates a man in Gazipur, who was said to be killed five years ago in Meherpur district.

Rakibuzzaman alias Ripon (30) has been hiding in Sreepur, using the name Shariful Islam. He has been working as a technician at a textile factory there, Shaheed Abu Sarwar, superintendent of Kushtia district PBI, said.

A team of PBI picked him up on Sunday, he added.

Rakib was missing since July 2017 when he left his in-laws' house at Govipur village under Meherpur Sadar upazila, saying that he was going to his sister's house in a nearby village.

Unable to locate him, Rakib's father Monirul Islam filed a case with a Meherpur district court on October 15 in 2018, accusing Rakib's wife Shyamoli Khatun, her parents and uncle of hiding his son's body after murder. 

The court directed Meherpur police to find Rakib and submit report.

After a long investigation, police filed a final report to the court on March 1, 2020, stating that they find no trace of Rakib.

The court rejected the report and directed Kushtia PBI on March 11, 2020 to investigate the case.

PBI finally unearthed the incident and located Rakib from Gazipur.

The SP said Rakib procured a new NID card, changing his and his father's names. With the new identity, he married one Shimla Akhter on March 10, 2020 and they have a 6-month-old son.

Today, Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, Moniruzzaman, produced Rakib before Meherpur district court where he testified under Section 164 of CrPC.

Meherpur Judicial Magistrate Tariqul Islam recorded his statement and sent him to jail.

Meanwhile, hearing the news of Rakib's return, his family rushed to the Meherpur court premises.

His father Monirul said he was saddened by his son's behaviour.

The law will take its own course, he said.
