Explosion at Ctg Court: JMB’s ‘Boma Mizan’ gets death, another life term

A Chattogram court yesterday sentenced Mizan alias "Boma Mizan", a top explosives expert and a JMB leader, to death and another militant to life term imprisonment in a case filed over the killing of two people, including a police constable, in a bomb attack on Chattogram court premises on November 29, 2005.

Ctg JMB's divisional commander Jabed Iqbal, who was given life term, was also fined Tk 2 lakh, in default of which he will have to serve two more years in jail, said Advocate Monoranjan Das, public prosecutor.

The court also relieved JMB chief Abdur Rahman, Bangla Bhai and Ataur Rahman Sani from the charges as they were

executed in another case.

Judge Abdul Halim of Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal of Chattogram delivered the verdict in presence of Jabed while Mizan is absconding.

Constable Rajib Barura and one Shahauddin, from Sitakunda upazila, were killed and 16 others injured in a suicide bomb attack at the police check post on the court building premises.

Following the attack, two cases were filed with Kotwali Police Station -- one was a murder case while another filed under the Explosives Act.

The then former Inspector of Detectives of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Hla Ching Pru, now additional superintendent of police, submitted the charge sheet to the

court, accusing five JMB leaders on May 18, 2006 in the murder case.

A Chattogram court later framed charges against the militants on April 16, 2007 in the case.

Mizan is now in an Indian jail after a special court in Kolkata sentenced him to 29 years' imprisonment in a case filed over explosion at a house in West Bengal's Burdwan in October 2014.
