Ex-Joypurhat mayor held at Dhaka airport

Former mayor of Joypurhat Municipality Md Mostafizur Rahman Mostak was arrested at Hajrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka today while attempting to flee to Malaysia, said police.

Mostak, 42, also Joypurhat district Awami League's joint general secretary, was arrested by airport immigration police around 11:00am, said Jahangir Alam, sub-inspector of Detective Branch (DB) police in Joypurhat.

Mostak is accused in multiple cases, including the murder of Najibul Sorkar Bishal during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in August last year, said SI Jahangir.

He was absconding since the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5.

The immigration police had remained on high alert to prevent him from leaving the country, said police.

A team from Joypurhat DB Police has already left for Dhaka to bring him back.

According to the police, he is expected to be produced before the court after bringing him to Dhaka.
