Drive to save brood hilsa: UNO’s speedboat ‘attacked’ in Barishal

The Mehendiganj upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) said fishermen today attacked a speedboat on which he was conducting a drive to save brood hilsa.

UNO Shahadat Hossain Masood said his speedboat was attacked on the Gazaria river in Darirchar Khajuria union of the upazila around 10:00am today, reports our Barishal correspondent.

"While conducting the drive, some fishermen deliberately pushed the speedboat with a powerful engine-driven trawler and fled, resulting in the part submersion of the speedboat and injuries to two two Ansar men," said the UNO.

"The fishermen have become desperate, they are not abiding any instruction and catching hilsa in front of admin officials without paying.

"Yesterday we detained 22 fishermen but even after that the others are becoming reckless," he added.

"The process of arresting and taking legal action against the attackers is underway," said Shafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mehendiganj Police Station.
