Masked gunmen shot the ward councillor and his associate Haripada Das at the councillor's office in Pathuriapara area on Monday.
Sohel (48) was also the panel mayor of Cumilla City Corporation and president of the ward unit of Awami League.
The gunmen stayed around 20 minutes after opening fire on Sohel in his office so that no one could take him to hospital immediately, said his associates and locals.
The attackers, some wearing masks and some helmets, shot others in the leg in and outside the office, indicating that they were professional hitmen, said law enforcers.
