Bangladesh Coast Guard detained eight people attempting to smuggle a large consignment of cement to Myanmar early yesterday.

Lieutenant Commander Siam-ul-Haque, media officer of the Coast Guard, said that acting on information, they conducted a drive near the Bakkhali river estuary in Cox's Bazar.

During the raid, they searched a fishing boat and found 375 sacks of cement.

All eight suspected smugglers aboard the boat were detained.

"The seized boat, the recovered items, and the detainees are undergoing further legal procedures," the officer added.
