Trawler with 47 cattle capsizes in Padma
A trawler with 47 sacrificial cows capsized in the Padma in Harirampur upazila of Manikganj today.
Of the total, 19 cows were rescued till last evening, said Suman Kumer Aditya, officer-in-charge of Harirampur Police Station.
The OC said cattle farmers and traders were going to Narayanganj's Mograpara market from Chauhali, Sirajganj with the sacrificial animals.
On the way, the accident took place at Shutrakandi around 10:30am. All the passengers managed to swim ashore.
After the incident, many of the farmers who were transporting their cattle were in despair. Even though they managed to save themselves, all of their investments and savings were lost, they added.
Another trader Abdullah said, "I was going to Narayanganj with four cows; of them, one was rescued and the other three remained missing."
Farmer Zamir Uddin said not one of his eight cattle could be rescued.
Lal Mia, who lost two of his cows, echoed him.
Faruk, owner of the trawler, said they are still not sure how the trawler capsized.
The accident occurred after the vessel's front part suddenly sank, said UNO Shahriar Rahman of Harirampur, quoting passengers.
The sunken trawler and 28 cattle are still missing, he said.
The district administration will donate Tk 20,000 each to the affected persons.
