Stone quarry worker drowns in river

A stone quarry worker drowned in the Chawai river in Panchagarh Sadar upazila yesterday while swimming across the river to join work.

The victim was Nurul Islam, 60, of Kazipara village.

Quoting locals, Abdul Latif Mia, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, told The Daily Star that Nurul drowned in the middle of the river around 11:00am when he was swimming across the river with necessary equipment used to extract stone.

Villagers brought him to Panchagarh Sadar Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, the OC said.
