Fire, explosion at Ctg depot: 14 burnt, including 2 firemen moved to Dhaka’s burn institute

Fourteen people, who sustained burn injuries in the fire and subsequent explosions at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram last night, were brought to Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital Dhaka today (June 5, 2022) for better treatment.

Dr Samanta Lal Sen, chief coordinator of the institute, confirmed the development to The Daily Star tonight.

"14 people injured in the fire incident at Sitakunda have been brought here. Two of them are firefighters and one is a policeman," said the doctor.

"15 to 80 per cent of their bodies were burnt in the fire. The physical condition of all are critical," he  added.

At least 49 people were killed and hundreds of people, including police and fire service personnel sustained burn injuries in the incident, according to Dr Ilias Hossain Chowdhury, civil surgeon of Chattogram.

The fire broke out at BM Container Limited in Shitalpur area around 10pm last night (June 4).

At 2:30 pm, the media cell of the fire service and civil defence said that 25 units of the fire service were working there to douse the fire.

In addition, 250 members of the Bangladesh army are working in the rescue operation there, according to the Inter Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR).
