20 workers injured in Jashore jute mills fire

At least 20 workers were injured in a fire that broke out at a jute mill in Sharsha upazila of Jashore today.

The fire started around 1:00 pm at Afil Jute Weaving Mills Ltd, owned by Sheikh Afil Uddin, a lawmaker from Jessore-1 constituency, reports our Benapole correspondent quoting Manaranjan Sarkar, assistant director of Benapole Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Six firefighting units from Jashore, Jhikargacha and Benapole fire services brought the fire under control at 3:00 pm, he said.

Of the injured, Akher Ali was admitted to Jashore General Hospital with severe burn injury while others were released after giving primary treatment, he said.

Three warehouses of the mill were gutted in the fire, said Abdul Wahab, general manager of the jute mill.

"We suspect that the fire originated from an electric short circuit. The extent of damages can be confirmed after investigation," The fire official also said.
