1 killed, 3 injured in road crash
A bus-helper was killed after a truck ploughed into a crowd and fell into a ditch at Bhaterchar New Road area in Munshiganj's Gazaria upazila on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Nasim, 18, a resident of Haldia village in Munshiganj's Louhajang upazila. Besides, three were also injured in the accident.
Firefighters had to go through a frantic effort to rescue an injured person stuck under the truck's wheel for two and a half hours.
The rescued person Mukul Hossain, 40, is a resident of Rayer Bagh in Dhaka. The two other injured -- Shahjahan, 32 and Md Mehedi Hasan, 28, -- were undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the capital, as their condition was critical.
Injured Mukul is a bus driver and Nasim was his helper. They were waiting at the area to return home after doing maintenance work on their bus.
The Dhaka-bound truck -- carrying rods -- lost control and ploughed into a crowd at Bhaterchar on Dhaka-Chattogram highway around 9.30pm on Monday, said ASM Rashedul Islam, in-charge of Bhaterchar Highway Police Station.
After hitting four people, the vehicle fell into a ditch beside the road, said the officer.
Locals found Mukul stuck under the wheel and sent the other injured to Gazaria Health Complex, where on-duty doctors declared Nasim dead, said Rashedul.
Upon receiving information, firefighters from Gazaria fire service sub-station reached the spot, said locals.
Two units of the fire service rescued Mukul at midnight after two and a half hours and sent him to the hospital, said Officer Ali Azgar of the sub-station.
Police seized the truck but the truck driver and his assistant managed to escape, said Rashedul.
