5 killed in road accidents in Lalmonirhat, Gazipur

Five people, including a mother and her three-and-a-half-year-old daughter, were killed in separate road accidents in Lalmonirhat and Gazipur.

Three people were killed and seven others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari road in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat around 9:30am this morning.

The identities of the deceased and injured could not be immediately confirmed, said Patgram Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam.

The CNG-run auto-rickshaw was heading towards Patgram from Burimari Land Port when it collided with a goods-laden truck coming from the opposite direction, the OC said.

Quoting eyewitnesses, the OC said the truck driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed the auto-rickshaw. The truck then veered off the road and crashed into a roadside shop.

The auto-rickshaw was badly mangled, leaving two people dead on the spot.

Following the accident, local residents and members of Patgram Fire Service and Civil Defence rescued the injured and took them to Patgram Upazila Health Complex, where another victim died while undergoing treatment.

According to health complex authorities, five of the seven injured were in critical condition. After receiving primary treatment, they were referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The other two injured are undergoing treatment at the Patgram health complex.

Police seized the truck, but its driver and helper fled the scene, said the OC, adding that preparations were underway to take legal action.

Mother, daughter killed in Gazipur

A woman and her three-and-a-half-year-old daughter were killed in a road accident in Pubail, Gazipur, early today.

The deceased were identified as Rujuka Begum, 30, and her daughter Yamni.

The accident occurred between 1:00am and 2:00am near Meghdubi Kali Factory on the Gazipur-Gawsia Bypass Road under Pubail Police Station.

Sub-Inspector Md Anwar Islam of Pubail Police Station confirmed the deaths.

Rujuka was the daughter of Sekandar Ali of Baghata village in Sreebardi upazila of Sherpur and the wife of Monir Hossain. She and her daughter lived in a rented house owned by one Mostafa in the Salna Bazar area under Gazipur Sadar Police Station.

SI Anwar said an unidentified vehicle hit the mother and daughter on the road in the early hours, leaving them critically injured. After receiving a call through the national emergency service 999, police went to the scene and rescued them before taking them to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital.

Doctors declared Rujuka dead after examination. Yamni was undergoing treatment at the hospital but died at around 3:00am.

SI Anwar said police were investigating where the mother and daughter were going and how the accident occurred.

“Preliminarily, we suspect that they were injured after being hit by an unidentified vehicle. The vehicle fled the scene after the accident,” he said.Our Lalmonirhat and Gazipur correspondents contributed to this report.
