Villagers attack policemen suspecting them robbers

Villagers attacked and confined a police team suspecting them as robbers when they went to arrest an accused at Ambarnagar village in Sonaimuri upazila early yesterday. ASP Mahbubul Alam of Begumganj circle along with five policemen went to a house at Ambarnagar village to arrest accused Iqbal around 2:00am. Seeing the team, Iqbal and his wife informed the villagers over phone that robbers attacked their house. Within a few minutes, a group of villagers rushed to the house. They besieged the house and started pelting brick chips at the law enforcers, injuring Alam, his driver and three villagers. Angry villagers also held the police team hostage and set fire to a police van. On information, additional police forces from Begumganj and Senbagh police stations rushed to the spot and rescued the police officers from the villagers around 4:00am after a negotiation with them. The ASP said that the incident occurred when they raided the house to arrest Iqbal in a case filed for killing a son of one Gafur Master of the village. Confirming the incident, Humayun Kabir, officer in-charge of Sonaimuri police station, said the policemen were rescued and the situation was now under control. Police arrested 20 people, including Shahida Akter, wife of Iqbal, in connection with the incident, the OC added.
