2 villagers killed, 20 hurt in clash with organisers
Two villagers were killed and 20 others injured in a clash as they went to protest obscene dance in the name of jatra (open air opera) in Pirganj upazila early yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Shamsul Islam, 50, son of late Abdus Samad of Parbatipur village and Serajul Islam, 40, of Gurjipara village in the upazila.
Police and locals said Monjur Hossain of Dasharpara village in the same upazila along with his associates arranged obscene dance in the name of jatra at Gurjipara haat (village market) on Saturday night.
At about 12:30am, a group of villagers went to the spot and requested the organisers to stop the obscene dance.
At this, Monjur and his men locked in an altercation with the protesters.
At one stage, Monjur Hossain and others locked in a fierce clash with the villagers with sharp weapons, leaving Shamsul Islam dead on the spot and 20 others from both sides injured.
Among the injured, Mokbul Hossain, 60, Mominur, 45, Lalchan, 50, Shahinur, 45, Serajul Islam, 40, and two sons of Samsul Islam were taken to Pirganj upazila health complex.
As the condition of Mokbul, Mominur, Lalchan, Shahinur and Serajul deteriorated, they were referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where Serajul succumbed to his injuries yesterday afternoon.
Hasan Shamim Iqbal, officer in-charge of Pirganj police station said that police sent the bodies to Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
