80 Jamaat, Shibir men arrested

Police arrested 80 'leaders and activists' of Jamaat-Shibir in Madhupur upazila yesterday afternoon. Over 100 Jamaat men led by its upazila unit ameer Burhan Uddin and upazila unit Shibir president Lokman Hossain in two buses went to Madhupur forest in the name of picnic, said Saleh Mohammed Tanvir, superintendent of police. On secret information, a team, jointly led by ASP Shajahan Mia and officer in-charge at Madhupur police station raided the forest and arrested 80 of them while they were holding a secret meeting there. However, the rest managed to flee. We are verifying the identities of the arrestees, the SP said. Police also arrested seven Jamaat-Shibir activists from two upazilas in Chapainawabganj on Wednesday night on charge of trying to creating chaos and confusion, reports our correspondent. The arrestees were identified as Mohammad Mustakin, 21, of Sadar upazila and Alauddin, 24, Rafiqul Islam, 44, Ruhul Amin, 18, Hasan Ali, 18, Monirul Islam, 18, and Mustafizur Rahman, 20, of Gomostapur upazila.
