Youth beaten to death allegedly by police for illegal toll

A 'drug addict' youth was killed allegedly by policemen for not paying them toll at Mahmudpur village of Sirajganj Sadar upazila on Wednesday night. Alleging death due to police torture, villagers went on rampage in Shaheed Minar area of the town. The deceased was identified as Farid Ahmed, 32, son of Rohiz Uddin of the village. Rohiz said that a team of police, led by sub-inspectors Abdus Salam and Md Selim, raided their home at around 9:00pm and beat his son up mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot for not paying them illegal toll. As the death news spread, agitating locals brought out a protest procession in the area and ransacked a few vehicles there, demanding punishment to the accused law enforcers, said Md Ataur Rahman, councillor of ward No1 of the municipality. He also said that the deceased was a drug peddler. On information, police rushed to the spot and opened fire to disperse the angry mob, said Md Rofikul Islam, officer in-charge at Sadar police station. Refuting the allegation, the OC said that police raided the residence of the youth to recover drug. But he managed to flee and later he died at a local hospital due to illness. “Earlier, the law enforcers recovered six bottles of phensidyl from the residence of Faridâ€, said the OC. Additional superintendent of police Md Mokter Hossain said no sign of torture was found during primary investigation. After getting the autopsy report, the reason behind the death could be known, he said.
