Clashing villagers in Magura vandalise 24 houses, torch 2
Twenty-four houses were vandalised and looted and two others came under arson attack during a clash between the residents of two villages under Bogia union of Magura Sadar upazila yesterday.
The villagers belonging to Paturia and Bagbaria villages locked in the violent clash in the morning as a youth named Rokonuddin Ahmed Bisawa of Paturia village was killed by Bagbaria villagers on Wednesday night.
Locals said the incident was a sequel to a longstanding rivalry between incumbent UP member Tayebur Rahman Biswas of Bagbaria village and former UP member Abdul Karim Biswas of Paturia village.
Rokonuddin, son of Abdul Karim Biswas, came under attack allegedly by the supporters of Tayebur Rahman while he was returning home from a local market at around 8:30pm. The attackers hit him with sharp weapons, resulting in his death on the spot.
Police and locals said the supporters of Karim Biswas, equipped with lethal weapons, swooped on their rivals, prompting them to retaliate. Twenty-four houses, shops and brick kilns were vandalised and looted while two other houses torched at the two villages during the clash that continued for three and a half hours from 10:00am, they added.
Being informed, police led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Saheb ALi Pathan and a team of Rab-6 went to the spot and brought the situation under control.
While visiting the area in the afternoon, this correspondent found that many villagers had fled their homes, fearing further clash and police harassment.
No case was lodged with Sadar Police Station in connection with the incident as of filing of this report at 5:00pm.
Contacted, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahangir Alam of Sadar PS said police and Rab personnel have been deployed in the area to avert any further clash.
