Review verdict, ensure death penalty for Quader Mollah

Socio-political and cultural organisations and people from various sections of society yesterday poured into streets in several districts, demanding death sentence of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 on Tuesday sentenced Quader Mollah to life in prison for his role during the Liberation War in 1971. The agitators took out processions, staged sit-ins and rallies demanding a 'review' of the verdict to ensure death penalty for the jamaat leader, report our correspondents. Khulna: Hundreads of people under the banner of “Social-Cultural and political Jote” held a rally at Shibbari intersection at noon demanding capital punishment to all war criminals including Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah. Teachers and students of Khulna University, members of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote, Muktijoddha-Janata Projanmo and leaders and workers different political parties joined the rally. Swadhinata Chikitsak Parisad arranged a rally in front of BMA building at KDA Avenue at around 12.30pm. Teachers and students of Khulna University and Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) formed a human chain in the town demanding capital punishment to Kader Molla. Daulatpur unit of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote took out a procession and then held rally in front of local Uttara Bank branch on the same demand. Pabna: Freedom fighters brought out a procession in the district town in the morning demanding capital punishment to all war criminals including Kader Mollah. Students and activists of different socio-cultural organisations also joined the procession. Addressing a rally in front of the Muktijoddha Sangsad office, the speakers said people's expectation was not reflected in Tuesday's verdict, rather it created anger. They demanded capital punishment for Mollah. Manikganj: Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Awami League, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Communist Part of Bangladesh (CPB), Sector Commanders' Forum (SCF), Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee. Jointly staged a sit-in on Dhaka-Aricha highway near Manikganj bus stand for an hour from 11:30am demanding capital punishment for Quader Mollah. Hundreds of people, including freedom fighters, students and the activists of different socio-cultural organisations, joined the programme. Rangpur: Different bodies, including the district unit of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, have expressed outrage over the verdict of life sentence against Quader Mollah instead of capital punishment. They staged a rally in front of the local press club demanding capital punishment to all war criminals including Mollah. People from all walks of life joined the rally. It was addressed, among others, by Prof Abdus Sobhan and Mofizul Islam Montu, president and general secretary of the district unit of Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, BTV artiste Biplob Prosad, freedom fighter Sadrul Alam Dulu, Begum Rokeya University Treasurer Mozammel Haque. Bogra: Students, teachers, socio-cultural and political organisations and Sector Commanders' Forum began indefinite sit-in at Satmatha in the town yesterday demanding capital punishment to Quader Mollah. They vowed to continue the programme until the demand was met. The agitator also demanded a ban on Jamaat-Shibir politics and capital punishment to other war criminals. Khagrachhari: A three-day 'mass-agitation' programme, started at Mukta Moncha in the district town yesterday. Addressing a rally at the venue, the speakers demanded capital punishment to all war criminals including Quader Mollah. Khagrachhari Pourasava (municipality) Mayor Rafiqul Alam, District Muktijodhha Commander Mongsathowai Chowdhuari, Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) district unit chief Dr Sudhin Kumar Chakma spoke at the rally. Pirojpur: Local youths staged a sit-in in Pirojpur district town yesterday morning. Freedom fighters, socio-cultural and political activists joined the programme. The agitators chanted slogans, demanding capital punishment to all war criminals including Quader Molla. Later, they, carrying banners, placards, festoons, took out a procession and paraded the main streets. Similar agitation programmes were held in Natore, Gopalganj, Jessore, Naogaon, Bandarban, Thakurgaon and Chandpur districts, according to our correspondents.
