<i>All over a rumour that Rab would nab UP chairman</i>

The supporters of Goyeshpur Union Parishad (UP) chairman under Pabna Sadar upazila went on the rampage on Tuesday night following a rumour that Rab was conducting a raid in the area to arrest the chairman. They rushed to the house of UP Chairman Ibrahim Hossain, also the vice-president BNP Sadar upazila unit, put up barricades on Dhaka-Pabna highway at Goeyshpur and Jalalpur points, halting traffic for an hour from 8:00pm.They also vandalised at least 15 shops at Goyeshpur and Jalalpur bazars. Rab and police personnel went to the spot at around 9:00pm, pacified the chairman's men and removed the barricades from the highway. Sadar upazila BNP President AKM Musa in a press release yesterday claimed that some people, identifying themselves as Rab personnel, went to Goyeshpur to pick up Ibrahim Hossain from there. Pabna Rab sources said no such drive was conducted in Goyeshpur area on Tuesday night. Contacted, Captain Masud, commander of Pabna Rab camp, said Rab members visit different areas of the upazila everyday. A team of the elite force went to Goyeshpur at around 8:00pm on Tuesday as part of its routine patrol, not to arrest anybody, he added. Protesting the incident, Goyeshpur Union Awami League President Md Motahar Hossain said BNP men vandalised the shops and houses of AL men at Goyeshpur and Jalalpr bazars, spreading a rumour of Rab drive. He demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of BNP men responsible for vandalising the shops house at the two bazaars.
