A prosecution witness of the 10-truck arms haul cases stated before a Chittagong court yesterday that he gave his 2005 statement before the court “as per the prevailing situation”. His reply came after the defence, while cross-examining him before Chittagong Metropolitan Special Tribunal-1 Judge SM Mojibur Rahman, asked whether the 2005 statement was fabricated. Golam Rasul, former habildar of Bandar Police Outpost under Karnaphuli Police Station, also added that the cases' investigation officer did not call him to identify an accused, former NSI director Maj (retd) Liakat Hossain. He said Liakat identified himself as Abul Hossain during the seizure of 10 truckloads of arms and ammunition at a Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Limited jetty on April 2, 2004. Moreover, he had not wrongly identified Liakat as per the prosecution's instruction, he said. Two cases were filed -- one for smuggling firearms and the other under the arms act -- with Karnaphuli Police Station the day following the seizure.
