Detectives arrested a man from his East Shewrapara residence in the capital yesterday for allegedly impersonating police, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and National Security Intelligence (NSI) officials and cheating people. The arrestee, Mezbah Uddin Ahmed, 33, in preliminary interrogation, admitted to have cheated people in different ways, including making promises to provide jobs, said police. Police found some fake visiting cards containing the names of a superintendent of Highway Police, a Lt Col of NSI and additional superintendents of police of Special Branch and of Rab in his house. “We also seized a laptop containing layouts of visiting cards of law enforcement officials of different ranks,” said Senior Assistant Police Commissioner of Detective Branch of Police Al-Beli Afifa. “Mezbah used to give these visiting cards to CNG-run auto-rickshaw and bus drivers so that traffic police, in fear, would not stop them to check the documents. In return the drivers paid him,” Afifa added.
