10 hurt, 18 houses vandalised as rival AL men clash

At least ten people were injured and 18 houses vandalised during a clash between the supporters of two local Awami League leaders in Beroil-Palita union under Magura Sadar upazila yesterday. Police quoted locals as saying that there has been a long-standing rivalry between Enamul Haque Raja, vice-chairman of Magura Sadar Upazila Parishad and organising secretary of AL Sadar upazila unit, and Khondaker Mohabbat Ali, chaiman of Beroil-Palita Union Parishad and general secretary of AL union unit, over establishing supremacy in the union. Raja hails from Dohor-Singra village while Mohabbat from adjoining Beroil village in the same union. The trouble began at around 10:30am as Raja's men hit Ruhul Amin of their rival group with a sharp weapon following an altercation at Dohor-Singra village over control of the area. After half an hour, the supporters of the two AL leaders, equipped with lethal weapons, locked in a clash, leaving at least 10 people from both sides injured, four of them seriously. The seriously injured are Ruhul Amin, 30, Mohammad Solaiman Khan, 48, Serajul Islam, 50, and Enamul Molla. They are undergoing treatment at Magura Sadar Hospital. The feuding groups also vandalised at least 18 houses at the two villages and looted food grains and cattle. On information, police from Magura Sadar Police Station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Magura Mohammad Mijanur Rahman, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) in Magura sadar Mohammad Tabibur Rahman and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of sadar police station Munshi Asaduzzaman visited the spot. Contacted, ASP Mijanur Rahman said police have been deployed at the villages. Many people of the two villages have fled their homes, fearing further clash and police harassment.
