9 held for killing Sirajganj Sramik League leader

Supporters torch 11 houses of rivals

Police arrested nine people from different areas in Sadar upazila yesterday and the day before in connection with the killing of a former general secretary of Sirajganj Motor Workers' Union. Shahidul Islam, Anwar Hossain, Abdur Razzak, Mohammad Ali, Alam Sheikh, Sohel Alam and Rafiqul Islam were arrested from Dhanbandi and Putiabari areas in the town while the rest from other areas. At least 10 people were also injured in a clash with police in Dhanbandi yesterday morning following the burial of the former motor workers' union leader Nasir Uddin. Nasir, also a Sramik League leader, was killed and 14 others injured in a clash between the supporters of BNP and AL over lifting of sand from the Jamuna River of the upazila on Sunday. Police said the agitating followers of Nasir yesterday vandalised and torched at lest 11 houses and five shops following a rumour of death of an injured Shakil Ahmed Tikka at Dhaka. Later, the agitators locked in a clash with police, leaving at least 10 injured when they were resisted by the law enforcers marching towards in the area along with a procession at around 11:00am. Additional police have been deployed in the area to aver further trouble, said Syed Shahid Alam, officer in-charge of Sadar Police Station. A murder case was filed with the police station accusing 65 people, said the OC.
