UP chairman rescued 30 hours into abduction
The union parishad (UP) chairman, abducted from Laxmipur Sadar upazila on Saturday night, was rescued from Chatkhil upazila of Noakhali yesterday.
Police said they rescued Abul Kashem Jihadi, chairman of Boshikpur Union Parishad under Laxmipur Sadar upazila, from Badalkot union in Chatkhil upazila at around 6:00am.
Locals found Jihadi lying in an unconscious state under a culvert and informed the police. Nazmul Haq, officer-in-charge of Chatkhil Police Station, said they went to the spot and rescued the UP chairman with the help of local people. His hands and legs were tied up, the OC added.
He was rushed to Chatkhil Upazila Health Complex and then shifted to local Noman Hospital. No one was arrested in connection with the abduction of the UP chairman as of filing of this report at 3:00pm yesterday.
Unidentified criminals picked up Abul Kashem Jihadia, also an Awami League leader, from Poddar Bazar in Laxmipur Sadar upazila at around 11:00pm on Saturday.
Protesting the incident, the supporters of Kashem halted vehicular movements on Dhaka-Laxmipur Road and other roads in the area for four hours from 10:00am on Sunday.
They also staged a demonstration in the town and damaged at least 20 vehicles in the morning. During the vandalism, at least 20 people were injured.
