A victim of domestic violence in Chirirbandar upazila under the district has got verdict in her favour under Family Protection Act, the first of its kind in the district since the act, meant for preventing domestic violence, was enacted in 2010. Jesmin Ara Begum, wife of Akramul Haque of Nogra village in Chirirbandar upazila, recently filed a case under the act with the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Sarafuzzaman Ansari against her in-laws for torturing her. The court on Sunday delivered the verdict for permanent security in favour of Jesmin Ara Begum, strictly directing the accused not to torture or harass Jesmin or any of her family members including her children and husband, and not to disturb her movement anywhere. From now on, the opponents should not enter Jesmin's house, the verdict adds. If anyone violates the court order, he/she will get imprisonment for highest six months and a fine of Tk 10,000, court sources said, adding that in case of further violation of the court order, the accused will get jail term for at least two years and a fine of Tk 1 lakh. According to the prosecution, Jesmin's father-in-law Md Mahtab, brother-in-law Shamsur Rahman, sister-in-law Rasheda Begum and her husband Khalilur Rahman often tortured Jesmin physically and mentally over trifling matters. They also spread slanderous statement about her, terming her as a 'characterless' woman in the area. The accused used to damage the crops of her husband's land and restricted her movement in the area, Jesmin Ara Begum mentioned in the case. "I have got the verdict, let's see what happens next," said a beaming Jesmin. "In Dinajpur, the verdict is first of its kind under the act," said advocate Tayaba Begum who worked as lawyer of Jesmin. Under the act, there are five more cases still pending with the court in Dinajpur, court sources said. According to the law, a case under the act has to be solved within 60 working days.
