Clash over lifting sand from river, one killed, 14 hurt

An Awami League activist was killed and 14 others were injured in a clash between the supporters of BNP and AL over lifting of sand from the Jamuna River of Sadar upazila yesterday morning. The deceased, Nasir Uddin, of Hossainpur village, was also a former general secretary of Sirajganj Motor Workers' Union. There was a longstanding conflict between Nasir and a local BNP leader Abdus Sattar over the issue. As a sequel to the conflict, the followers of the rivals equipped with lethal weapons attacked each other, leaving at least 15 from both sides injured. The injured were rushed to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital where the doctors declared Nasir dead at about 3:30pm. As the death news spread, the workers of the motor workers' union blocked a road of Bangabandhu Bridge for an hour, creating traffic jam. Additional police have been deployed in the area to avert further trouble.
