35 injured as AL, BNP men clash in Magura

At least 35 people were injured, 17 of them seriously, in a clash between the supporters of Awami League (AL) and BNP at Monirampur village under Magura Sadar upazila yesterday. Police quoted locals as saying that there has been a long-standing rivalry between ward AL leader Mohammad Golam Rabbani and ward BNP leader Mohammad Abdul Mannan over establishing supremacy at the village under Palita-Beroil union. The supporters of both Rabbani and Mannan chased each other on Saturday afternoon following an altercation over a football match. As a sequel to the incident, the rival groups, equipped with equipped with lethal weapons, attacked each other at the village at around 10:00am yesterday, leaving at least 35 people from both sides injured. Being informed, police from a local camp and Sadar Police Station rushed to the spot, dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control. The seriously injured-- Alim Sheikh, 24, Surman Ali, 41, Muslimuddin, 23, Amirul Islam, 20, Abdur Rashid Molla, 26, Selim Hossain, 27, Anis Sheikh 28, Ziaul Islam, 30, Abul Kashem Fakir, 28, Obaidur Rahman, 40, Azizul Hasan, 18, Mizanur Rahman, 23, Mohammad Majnu Mian, 48, Jahangir Alam, 42, Rabiul Islam, 28, Liakat Ali, 32, Daud Hossain Molla, 55, and Mokbul Hossain, 60,-- were admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital while the rest were given first aid. Contacted, Munshi Asaduzzaman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station, said police have been deployed at the village to avert any further untoward incident. No case in connection with the clash was lodged with the police station concerned as of filing of this report at 3:30pm yesterday.
