UP chairman, 5 members sued in Nilphamari

A union parishad chairman and four members have been sued on charge of misappropriating rice meant for poor people under Vulnerable Group Development (VGD) programme in Sadar upazila of the district. Abul Asad Ahmed, project implementation officer (PIO) of the upazila, filed a case against the chairman and the members with Sadar Police Station on Thursday. The accused are Enamul Haque, chairman of Gorgram Union Parishad (UP), and members Habibur Rahman of ward No 4, Al- Ansarul of ward No-5, Lal Babu of ward No-7 and Mominul Haque of ward No-8. The PIO said the government allocated 8.6 tonnes of rice for distribution among 286 VGD cardholders of Gorgram union before Eid-ul- fitr. Each of the cardholders was supposed to get 30 kg of rice. He also alleged that the five accused in collusion with the members gave the cardholder less than the stipulated amount of rice and misappropriated five and a half bags rice to sell them in market. They stored the rice in the union parishad godown, he said. Being informed by locals, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mostaim Billah recently visited the godown and seized the VGD rice from there. As per directive of the UNO, the PIO filed the case accusing the chairman and the members Accused UP chairman Enamul Haque denied the allegation, saying that he kept the rice in the godown to distribute among the cardholders who could not receive the rice before Eid.
