PCJSS-UPDF gunfight in Rangamati, one killed

A man was killed during a gunfight allegedly between the activists of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) and rival United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) at remote Bhallukmara chhara village in Baghaichhari upazila of the district on Monday. The dead was identified as Shiba Ratan Chakma, 30, son of Harbo Chakma of the village. Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Abdur Razzak of Baghaichhari Police Station said the man was blind and caught in the crossfire. The armed clash between PCJSS and UPDF took place over control of the remote Bhallukmara Chhara, Razzak said, adding that both sides exchanged 20-25 bullets during the clash that continued for 20 minutes from 11:30am. Police recovered the body yesterday and sent it to Khagrachhari Adhunik Hospital for autopsy. No case was lodged with Baghaichhari police Station in connection with the killing as of 4:00pm yesterday. Meanwhile, Parbatya Bangalee Gono Parishad (PGP) and Samo Odhikar Andolan (SOA) have called for two days hartal in three hill districts from today demanding scrapping of the 'controversial' clauses in the peace accord and protesting a move to recruit hill police by the hill district councils.
