4 BGB men, local 'smuggler' charge sheeted after 2 years

Four members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and an alleged smuggler have been charge sheeted in a case for killing of an youth on Mogholhat border in Sadar upazila in 2010. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) police prepared the charge sheet and submitted it to the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court yesterday morning. The accused BGB men are Havilder Mahabub Alam, Lance Nayek Mohammad Ali and soldiers Abdul Jalil and Al-Amin of Mogholhat BGB camp and Saidul Islam, an alleged smuggler of Mogholhat village. Of the five accused, the four BGB men are now in Lalmonirhat district jail, while the other accused obtained bail from the High Court, police said. The 4 border guards in collusion with Saidul picked up Rashidul Islam, 28, from his Chawratari home over an enmity related to smuggling on August 18 in 2010, police said. The BGB men allegedly took him to Dharla river embankment at Mogholhat border, where they severely tortured him and threw him into the river. Rashidul's body was found at Kolakhawa Ghat, 8 kilometers off the spot on August 20, two days after the incident. Abdul Haque, father of Rashidul, filed a murder case accusing the four BGB men and the smuggler with Lalmonirhat Sadar police station on August 22. Investigation Officer (IO) of the case Ismail Hossain said that Rashidul murder case was transferred to CID police in September, 2011. The CID police have prepared the charge sheet after investigating the sensitive murder thoroughly, the IO said. Shefali Begum, wife of Rashidul, yesterday said “I demand justice. I am waiting for an exemplary punishment to the killers”. Rashidul's father Abdul Haque alleged that he and his family members were threatened by various quarters including local political leaders to resolve the case mutually. They also offered Tk five lakh in cash, he added. The family members said they are happy as the CID police placed the charge sheet to the court after a thorough investigation, he added.
