Amtali Upazila Parishad chairman Salauddin Ahmed has been suspended on charges of corruption and irregularities. Enamul Kabir, senior assistant secretary of the LGRD and Cooperatives Ministry, recently sent a letter to the Barguna deputy commissioner ordering suspension of the upazila chairman with effect from August 26. Vice-chairman AKM Shamsuddin Shanu has been given the charge of acting upazila parishad chairman. On March 7, chairmen of all the union parishads under the upazila moved a no-confidence motion to the Barisal divisional commissioner against Salauddin with allegations of corruption, irregularities and nepotism against him. Additional divisional commissioner Shawkat Akbar on behalf of the divisional commissioner arranged a vote of no-confidence on June 5 when 15 out of 16 members cast their vote in favour of the motion. Only municipality mayor Matiar Rahman favoured the upazila chairman. Later, the authorities found the allegations to be true during an investigation.
