15 jailed for gambling, possessing drugs

Mobile courts in Netrakona, Rangpur and Naogaon districts jailed 15 people for gambling and possessing drugs on Monday and the day before. A mobile court in Mohonganj upazila of Netrakona on Monday sent five gamblers and three drug addicts to jail for one month each, reports our correspondent. Gamblers Afazzal Hossain, Jweel Mia, Judge Mia, Himel and Manir hail from Mileura, Tangapara and Pathorghata villages while Laxmu Mia, Abul Kashem and Abul Kalam from Komolpur and Goruhatta in the upazila. Md Shahidullah, officer in-charge at Mohonganj police station, said police arrested the eight from the villages on Sunday night on charge of gambling and taking ganja. According to our Rangpur correspondent, a mobile court in Badarganj upazila town on Sunday night sentenced five drug peddlers to imprisonment on different terms. The convicts are Yasin Ali, 50, son of Abdul Sheikh of Shibpur Balapara village, Dipak Chandra, 30, son of Madhab Chandra of Shahapur Masterpara area, Mosharof Hossain, 40, son of late Islam Uddin of the same area, Babu Mohanta, 40, son of Kartik Mohanta of Thanapara area and Dhononjoy Roy, 26, son of late Harendra Roy of Bawchandi Shahapara area in the town. Court sources said a team of law enforcers raided Shahapur area at night and arrested the five along with 750 grams of hemp. The arrestees were produced before the court led by executive magistrate Khondakar Istiak Ahmed which sentenced Yasin and Dipak to one year imprisonment each and Mosharof, Babu and Dhononjoy to four months each. A mobile court in Naogaon on Monday sentenced two people to six months' jail each for possessing drugs, reports our Chapainawabganj. Earlier, the two were arrested by Rab from Dhamkuri area of the district town along with cannabis. The convicts were identified as Lutfar Rahman, 36, and Alkas Sheikh, 37, of Bogra.
