Filling pond at Barisal Law College protested
Locals and students yesterday formed a human chain in front of Barisal Law College, protesting construction of shops by filling a pond of the institution.
On Friday night, a few land grabbers filled a portion of the pond and built some shops there, said the protesters.
They also said the firefighters would not get water in emergency situation if the pond was not saved from the grabbers.
Almost all the ponds of the city have disappeared due to land grabbing and encroachment, they said.
The protesters further alleged that local ward councilor Naimul Hossain Litu led the land grabbers. They urged the authorities to remove the shops from the spot.
Jadav Mudi, one of the stall owners on the pond, said he informed Litu before taking the plot.
Contacted, Litu refuted the allegations.
Among others, Manabendra Batobayal, member of the college managing committee, Sajal Bhuyian and others, spoke.
