Absconding accused jailed, 7 others acquitted
A special tribunal yesterday awarded an absconding accused ten years imprisonment in the case for serial bomb blasts in Dinajpur town on August 17, 2005.
The convict, Md Afzal Hossain, 38, son of late Joynul Abedin of Khetripara area under Dinajpur municipality, was also fined Tk 10,000, in default to suffer six months more in jail.
Afzal, a regional leader of banned Islamist outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), was the mastermind of the serial blasts in Dinajpur, said police.
Md Gazi Rahman, judge of the special tribunal at Dinajpur, issued the verdict in a crowded court at noon in presence of seven of the eight accused in the case, court sources said.
The court acquitted the seven people as their involvement in the incident was not found.
They are Razu Mia of Amtoli village of Borguna district, Abu Razin and Md Abdul Motin of Dilanpur village in Badarganj upazila of Rangpur district, Tozammel Hossain of Mohabbatpur village under Dinajpur Sadar upazila, Nazrul Islam of Khanpur, Rashib Bin Mokbul of Shikdarhat, Aminul Islam of Ramnagar of Dinajpur Sadar upazila and Raihanur Rahman of Chhatoil village under Bochaganj upazila of Dinajpur district.
Nazrul Islam, Rashid Bin Mokbul and Razu Mia were produced before the court from Dinajpur jail while the other accused had earlier got bail from the High Court, police said.
Md Abdus Salam, the then sub inspector of Dinajpur Sadar police station, filed a case on August 17 in 2005 mentioning that at least 10 bombs were exploded at different places in the district headquarters on the day.
JMB set the bombs, including five inside Dinajpur court complex, one each in front of Dinajpur police station, Dinajpur Sadar Hospital intersection, Dinajpur Eye Hospital intersection, Dinajpur Jailmore and Central Bus Terminal in the district town.
The serial blasts triggered panic among the locals.
Later, Dinajpur police recovered two unexploded bombs, leaflets of JMB and some books on Jihad from different places, police said.
Police arrested the aforesaid seven people, suspecting their involvement in the serial blasts.
The Criminal Investigation Department carried out an investigation in the case and filed a charge sheet accusing the eight people in November the same year.
During the trial, the court examined 39 witnesses.
