Fake spiritual healer held in Lalmonirhat
Police arrested a woman, who claimed herself as a spiritual healer, on Friday on charge of cheating villagers.
Jesmin Begum, 27, wife of Liton Mia of Islampur village in Jamalpur district, allegedly amassed thousands of taka during the last one week.
Second officer of Sadar police station Ziaul Haque said Jesmin used to hyptonise the people of Mahendro Nagar village, especially women, and took handsome amount of money and other valuables in the name of spiritual healing.
During primary interrogation, the arrestee told police that a gang of 20, introducing themselves as 'fairy queen' or jeener maa (mother of genie), in different villages of Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts, cheated a large number of people in the last one week.
“I cheated villagers at Mahendro Nagar and earned Tk 80,000 but my gang leader Rebeka Begum took away the money from me”, Jesmin said.
Jahanara Begum, 35, wife of Tomir Uddin of the village, said “The woman came to our house a few days ago and took Tk 10,000 from me by showing her spiritual power”.
Another affected villager, Farzana Begum, 30, said the woman took Tk 8,000 from her.
Azizul Islam, 48, of the village, said on suspicion, the villagers handed Jesmin over to the police on Friday evening after giving a good beating.
Officer in-charge of the PS Jamir Uddin said they were conducting drives in different areas of the districts to arrest other members of the gang.
