Fresh areas in Kurigram, Netrakona flooded

Heavy rain and onrush of water from hills in the last 24 hours till yesterday morning worsened the flood situation in six upazilas of Kurigram district. The flash flood marooned at least 30,000 people in low-lying areas of around 60 villages in Ulipur, Chilmari, Roumari, Char Rajibpur, Phulbari and Sadar upazila, reports UNB. Sources at the Water Development Board (WDB) said, incessant rain coupled with onrush of water from the upstream in the last 24 hours ending 6 am yesterday, swelled 16 rivers including Brahmaputra, Dharala and Teesta abnormally. A WDB official said Dharala was flowing 6 centimeters over danger level, Brahmaputra 17 cm over danger mark at Nunkhaoa point and 15 cm at Chilmari point and Teesta 14 cm over red mark at Kawnia point at 6 am. Locals and WDB sources said, low-lying areas of the six upazilas and Dwipchar have been inundated damaging aman seedbeds, vegetables gardens and paddy fields of the locals. In Netrakona, floods situation in the last 24 hours improved slightly in the bordering villages of Durgapur upazila but deteriorated in its low-lying areas of Kalmakanda upazila and Khaliajuri upazila, reports our correspondent. The newly affected villages are Rudranagar, Montola, Ricka, Bishorpasha and Isapur village in Kalmakanda upazila and Nawapara, Kapasia, Haludhati, Rambari, Bhadua Shreepur and Ishorkhola in Durgapur upazila, Boali, Ichapur, Jagannathpur, Lepsia and Satgaw villages in Khaliajuri upazila. During the last few days, flood hit at least 25 villages in Durgapur upazila, 15 villages in Kalmakanda upazila and 10 villages in Khaliajuri upazila, leaving about one lakh people marooned, Water Development Board (WDB) sources said. Kalmakanda upazila administration sources said, erosion by River Mohishkhola took a serious turn devouring over 25 dwelling houses at Bharapara, Hajongpara, Sannashipara and Panchgaw villages in Kalmakanda upazila in the last two days since Saturday. About five kilometres of the Shibganj-Ranikong road linking Durgapur upazila headquarters and border villages have gone under water due to overflowing of Someshwary River, they said.
