Accused in journo Jamal murder case held in India
Indian police on Sunday night arrested a man in connection with the killing of local journalist Jamal Uddin from Helencha Bazar in South 24 Parganas district of Paschimbanga.
The arrestee was identified as Ukil Moral, an alleged drug peddler and son of late Shamsher Moral of Kashipur village in frontier Sharsa upazila of Jessore.
AKM Faruk Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sharsa police station, said they recently received information that some of the accused were hiding at Helencha Bazar under Bagdah police station in neighbouring India.
"We informed this to Sub-Inspector Gopal Biswas of Bagdah police station," OC Faruk said.
Later, Bagdah police team arrested Ukil Moral from the Bazar at about 9:30pm on Sunday, the OC said adding, now process is on to bring back the accused from India.
Jamal Uddin, 33, correspondent of the local Bangla daily Gramer Kagoj in Sharsa upazila, was killed by criminals at Kashipur Bazar area on 15 June night.
The OC said that a few months ago, Jamal filed a general diary with the police station against Tota Miah, a ring leader of drug peddlers, as he gave Jamal death threat for publishing news on his trade and activities.
Tota and 10 accomplices kidnapped Jamal from a tea stall at Kashipur Bazar around 11:00pm on that fateful night, OC Faruk said.
They took him to a lonely place, gouged out one of his eyes, cut tendons of legs and hacked him indiscriminately. The gang fled the scene when people rushed in hearing Jamal's cry for help.
Later, Jamal died on the way to Jessore Medical College and Hospital.
Police recovered a bloodstained towel and a machete from Tota's house and arrested his wife Lata Begum. Tota, however, went into hiding after the incident.
A murder case was filed accusing seven, including Tota Miah, with Sharsa police station.
AKM Mahfuzul Haque, investigation officer (IO) of the case, said two other accused in the case -- Raju and Ramjan Ali -- were also staying the same area of India.
