Prices of essentials go up in Khulna

Prices of essentials have started to spiral in the city ahead of Ramadan. While visiting the city's kitchen markets yesterday, this correspondent found that the prices of beef, fishes, poultry birds, edible oil, milk powder, pulses and vegetables rose significantly everywhere including Boro Bazar, city's evening market and KDA New Market. Retail price of soybean oil went up by Tk 4-6 a litre and was being sold between Tk 132 and Tk 134 per litre. It was sold Tk 128 a litre in the previous week. Different types of pulses were being sold at Tk 106 to Tk 110 per kg against the previous week's prices of Tk 100 to Tk 104. The prices of vegetables in the retail market also rose by almost 15 to 20 percent. “The prices shot up because of inadequate supply caused by rain and higher transportation fare,” said Taslim Hossain, a wholesaler at Boro Bazar. Traders at city's evening kitchen market said bitter gourd was being sold Tk 35-40 per kg, compared to its price range of Tk 28 to 32 per kg last week. Brinjal was selling at Tk 40 per kg instead of last week's Tk 36 and potato price rose to Tk 24 compared to Tk 20 a kg in the previous week. The prices of papaya, green banana, blue beens, arum, cucumber prices also rose by Tk 4 to 6 per kg. Green chilli price also rose by Tk 20 as it was being sold at Tk 70 kg. The price of poultry eggs went up and was now selling at Tk 108-110 per dozen in place of Tk 90-94 a couple of days ago. Prices of poultry birds (broiler) went up by Tk 10 to Tk 20 per kg. They are now being sold at Tk 175 to Tk 180. Beef price rose by Tk 10 and was selling at Tk 260 per kg as against Tk 250 last week, while mutton was selling at Tk 410 per kg. Besides, prices of different fishes increased slightly. A medium sized hilsa fish was selling at Tk 800 per kg, imported ruhi at Tk 240 per kg and local ruhi at Tk 280.
