Different social, cultural and business organisations jointly formed a human chain and held a rally in the town yesterday, demanding arrest of the criminals who attacked and injured a businessman for protesting stalking. Members of Sachetan Nagorik Committee, a unit of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), Trade Association, Puraton Bazar Babosayee Samity, District Contractors' Association, Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad, Prothom Alo Bandhu Sabha and businessmen of different markets took part in the human chain held in front of the local press club. Speakers at the rally said, criminals attacked Raihanul Islam Luna, a businessman and social worker, as he protested stalking on Wednesday night. They also urged the administration to take stern steps against drug peddling which is leading a large number of youths to astray and pushing them towards serious crimes. They said, Luna's sister-in-law and her husband were going to their house at Mistri Para in the town by an auto-rickshaw. As they reached Nimtola area at around 9:00pm, one Kamal forcibly got on to the auto-rickshaw to harass the woman. As her husband protested it, Kamal detained the auto-rickshaw, called his accomplices over mobile phone and assaulted them. Being informed, Raihanul Islam Luna rushed to the spot and protested it. At this, the criminals attacked him and injured him seriously. Local people rescued him and rushed him to Sadar Hospital. Later, the criminals again attacked him at the hospital. The hospital authorities informed the matter to Sadar police and a team arrested main accused Kamal, 28, of Islampur from the spot. A case was filed with Sadar police station accusing three including Kamal, but the others are yet to be arrested, they said. Later, the protesters yesterday brought out a procession that paraded different roads in town and submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner. In Jessore, a mobile court in Abhoynagar upazila yesterday sentenced two youths to 15 days imprisonment each for teasing a schoolgirl, reports our Benapole correspondent. The convicts were identified as Liton Sarder, son of Moslem Sarder and Tariqul Islam, son of Ikram Gazi of Panchkabar area of the upazila. Police said Liton and Tariqul had been sexually harassing the girl of the same village for a long time. On Saturday evening, the youths waylaid the girl on her way to a private coaching centre. Hearing her screams, local people caught Liton and Tariqul and handed them over to police.
