Caning in Kushtia
Protesters demand action against principal
Students of Kushtia Police Lines School and College along with their guardians formed a human chain on Kushtia-Pabna highway yesterday demanding removal of the school principal on charge of caning 14 students.
Sources said, the school authorities have already sent the principal on a one-month forced leave after the incident.
Fourteen students were severely caned allegedly by school principal Abu Dadra Md Arif Billah on Thursday for refusing to attend the coaching classes run by the school.
The students refrained from attending classes yesterday. A few of the victims also joined the guardians' rally held at the main gate of the school, demanding removal and punishment of the principal.
The students returned to classes when Superintendent of Police (SP) of Kushtia Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, also president of the managing committee of the institution, Additional Police Superintendent Subhas Chandra Saha and other high officials of police rushed to the spot and assured them of taking action against the principal if he was found guilty.
"We already have formed two probe bodies," the SP said.
Jessore Education Board formed a one-member probe committee with District Education Officer Nikhil Ranjan Chakrabarti on Friday night while Kushtia police administration formed a three-member body headed by additional police superintendent yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, the 14 students have returned home after receiving treatment at Kushtia General Hospital and different clinics.
