Drug peddlers, accused in criminal case beat up cops

Five policemen--three in Jhenidah and two in Netrakona--were physically assaulted by drug peddlers and accused in a criminal case on Friday night. In Jhenidah, a four-member police team raided Lebutala village in Moheshpur upazila at around 10:30pm and arrested drug peddler Rabiul Islam, 35, son of Monohar Uddin of the village, according to our correspondent. Hearing the news, Rabiul's accomplices surrounded the police team and beat up Sub-Inspector (SI) Anwar Hossain, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Milon Wahid and constable Monir Hossain of Moheshpur Police Station. They also confined the cops to a house at the village and snatched the arrested drug peddler from them. On information, BGB personnel from Matila camp reached the spot and rescued the policemen. At around 11:30pm, Jhenidah Police Superintendent Mostafizur Rahman and Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwar Hossain of Moheshpur Police Station reached the BGB camp and took the injured cops to Moheshpur health complex. A case was filed with Moheshpur Police Station, accusing five people, including Rabiul. Our Netrakona correspondent reported that two policemen of Purbadhola Police Station were beaten up by the accused in a criminal case at Jamdhola village under Purbadhola upazila at around 9:00pm on Friday. They also confined the cops to a house for an hour. Being informed, a police team headed by Additional Police Superintendent of Netrakona Delwar Hossain and Inspector (inquiry) of Purbadhola Police Station rushed to the spot and rescued Sub-Inspector (SI) Arifur Rahaman and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Raihan. Contacted, Additional Police Superintendent Delwar Hossain said, the two policemen came under attack when they went to the village to arrest the accused in a criminal case. A case was filed with Purbadhola Police Station, accusing 58 people the same night. Police in late night drive arrested 33 of the accused in police assault case.
